Since the nineties of the last century, Saudi-Turkish relations have varied between friendliness and implicit and sometimes overt hostility. This was clearly embodied in the case of the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Which led to significant tension in Saudi-Turkish relations and negatively affected the political and economic relationship of the two countries.
The Saudi-Turkish relations are distinguished by the presence of many common ties that directly affect them. Perhaps the most important of these is the doctrinal and religious ties, in addition to the volume of mutual investment between the two countries. The number of Turks residing in Saudi Arabia is more than two hundred thousand Turks. Turkey is a Saudi investment and tourism destination. And considering that both Saudi Arabia and Turkey are the largest and most influential powers in the region, any tension or disagreement in the Saudi-Turkish relations will reflect negatively on the region. This was evident in many cases, the most important of which was the Syrian file.
The fall of Saudi-Turkish relations begins at the end of 2018, due to the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Saudi Arabia and Turkey cut relations almost completely, which reflected negatively on the Turkish economy. This is due to the decline in the percentage of Turkish exports and the decrease in the percentage of Saudi investment in the Turkish market. This called on the Turkish administration to take clear steps to restore Saudi-Turkish relations for the benefit of the two countries. This was evident through the Turkish President's phone conversation had with his Saudi counterpart, before the G20 summit this year.
More than two hundred Turkish companies operate in the Saudi market in various fields, and the value of their investments in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is close to one billion dollars. On the other hand, Turkey has allocated a suitable and distinctive environment for Saudi investors. This made the Saudis one of the largest investors in the Turkish market, especially the real estate market. It granted the right to own real estate to everyone who holds Saudi citizenship, regardless of the type of property. This made the real estate market the most interesting sector by Saudi investors. The volume of Saudi investment in the real estate sector reached nearly thirty percent, led by more than four hundred Saudi real estate companies. This made the restoration of Saudi-Turkish relations a necessity.
Turkey is the main and primary destination for Saudi tourists. Where more than seven hundred thousand Saudi tourists go to Turkey every year. Istanbul is considered the first destination for every Saudi who wishes to own or travel to Turkey, especially that Istanbul has a magnificent nature. It is distinguished by a wide expanse of historical areas and monuments and a moderate atmosphere and charming views. Follow by the city of Trabzon as the second important city for Saudi investors and owners. This is because of its vast green areas and its global tourist character. The same applies to the capital, Ankara, and the city of Bursa as well.
No matter how Saudi-Turkish relations change, there remain many ties between the two peoples that push towards peace and love between them. The year 2021 witnessed a remarkable improvement in Saudi-Turkish relations, as a result of the positive initiatives taken by the two parties. This will be reflected positively and distinctively on the two countries in particular and on the Arab region in general. Prince Mohammed bin Salman stated, "There are those who seek to sabotage Saudi-Turkish relations, but they will not be able to do so with the presence of King Salman, Muhammad bin Salman, and President Erdogan." This statement is another evidence that the previous dispute has ended and it was only the result of efforts and efforts of external parties seeking to separate the two brothers.
At the beginning of this year, the Turkish official authorities stated that Saudi imports had increased significantly. Likewise, Turkey ranks as the ninth-largest exporter to Saudi Arabia, with the value of Turkish exports exceeding $ 3 billion. To be this news, the best evidence of the disappearance of the black cloud that befell between the two countries and that the region is moving towards great prosperity under the auspices of Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
